I found a 1955 steel Wheat penny, and it passed the magnet test. no mint marking that I can see. I figure that it's foreign but I can't seem to find any information on this particular penny. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Edited by seregiaur 01/23/2009 8:50 pm

It's a curious coin...is it possible the silvery material was plated over a bronze cent? To my eyes, it almost appears the material has worn off areas of the coin. Some metals like nickel will be magnetic even as a plating.

Even if it was nickel plating, there isn't enough left for it to be as strongly attracted to a magnet as it is. I can pick it up with a magnet, even when it isn't touching the silvery material. It is silvery and copper but which is wearing off I can't really tell. Argh, the coin mystery deepens!

There are many possibilities will a cent that looks that corrupted. It could have been dipped in a magnetic substance as suggested above or even partially filled with metal in some areas.
One thing is certain - This is not a mint error or variety.

Further magnet exploration, aka... my husband kidnapped the coin for "further testing" revealed that it is the nickel coating attracting the magnet. Alas, just another one for the oddities jar.

That's a strange one there seregiaur. Nickel shouldn't be attracked to the magnet, maybe a metalic substance but can't think what it would be. And to the forum.

pure nickel is strongly magnetic--take old Canadian nickels for example (besides the steel ones).

Maybe the metalic substance has lead in the composition of it just an idea I'm no expert!
