Too much glare to evaluate surface details clearly. Appears to be carbon flecking on both sides and perhaps some nicks between the front and back legs on the reverse, but it's difficult to be sure in these images.

Coinfrog, I noticed the flecking myself. These are seller's pics.

I'd be careful without better pics. I don't doubt that it's uncirculated, but it's hard to grade it accurately from these pics.

Just a note,1938's are common in high grade.

I know. I paid ~$15 for it. It's still a little better year/MM than some of the later Buffalos

Can't quite make out what's going on in BERTY; a hit? Same with the 8.

Those aside, spots (carbon spots?) keep this out of GEM, MS63/64 territory for me.

there are so many nice MS66 examples this is not one I would have pulled the trigger on but probably not worth the return shipping.

I'd spend $25 more and hunt down a PCGS or NGC MS64/65
There's plenty out there and it's a matter of finding a seller willing to take a reasonable offer

Good advice - keep your powder dry on this one.

I actually know the market for foreign coins better than for higher-end U.S. coins. I bought it because the reverse seems so well-struck

the 38D Buff are pretty much all full strikes and the easiest to find in MS66. strike is only one component in grading. never base a purchase on strike alone. the coin would be a nice MS66 example except for the spotting

best advice I can give you is if you are going to purchase a coin in a series you are not very familiar with post it here first for assessments. in this case it did not cost you a lot to learn something

IndianGoldEagle, are you referring to net grading? Is that still practiced? I use to see reference to Net Grade on some slabs, but not for a long time. Thanks for commenting.
