Hi all, I noticed this listing on ebay
https://www.ebay.com/itm/133973216614
The label says the coin is 1/500. What exactly does this mean? What lot of 500 is it referring to? Does this add any value?

My guess would be that someone authorized to use the official Olympic Rings logo had 500 of these graded and numbered.

You'll often read "buy the coin, not the holder" on this site. I suppose the same could be said for the label.

It means some dealer sent in a bulk submission of 500 proof Olympic dollars. they paid for a custom label (They probably aren authorized to use the olympic rings) and paid to have them labeled 1 of 500. The number 1 has no special significance as typically on a submission such as this ALL the coins are "1 of however many"

So their is absolutely nothing special or important about this coin, just a dealer trying to hopefully get a newbie to bite on a "#1 coin"

I suggest you look at the seller's feedback.

I would agree the submitter/label is probably not authorized - authorized uses typically cite (may be required to cite?) the appropriate section of the law. If you watch the TV commercials over the next couple months leading up to the games, you will see the logo everywhere...

So, did PCGS 'print' the label, or the submitter? The International Olympic Committee is rather protective of its trademarks, etc. Imagine the fun IOC would have going after PCGS (no mom and pop outfit by-the-way) for infringement. If PCGS didn't have permission to use/display/reproduce the rings, they are at risk.

The Olympic rings are the exclusive property of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). They are a mark protected around the world and cannot be used without the IOC's prior written consent.
