inherited this from my late grandfather.

I was told that he received this after conducting an orchestra in Germany.

I'm curious on its' history and composition.

I haven't been able to find any information about it online.

Thank you! Sorry about the glare, it's been concealed in a plastic casing.

I do not think it is a coin, medal? Do the three numbers 986? refer to silver content? Weight? Size?

That's what I thought, some type of token or medal.

Honestly not sure about the three numbers. 98.6% seems like an odd percentage, but I have no idea. Could maybe stand for the date? He received it in 1987.

Ah of course, here are the measurements:

Weight: 3.5 grams
Diameter: 3/4 of an inch

It appears to be a medal, but in the tradition of the "city view" coinage of previous centuries. Eppingen is, of course, the city in whose name this medal was issued. The legend on the obverse is "City rights since 1290". On the reverse, the city-view is labelled "Eppingen around 1650".

The "986" is the fineness mark, as required by German law; .986 fine gold is apparently a common standard for small German souvenir gold medals. If the 3.5 grams is accurate, that's about 200 US dollars worth of gold.

Well, I was close, I thought it was silver that toned a golden color. The size and weight helped a lot.

Thank you very much jbuck!

Wow Sap, thank you for the research and the amount of effort you put into figuring out some of the details of this medal! Seriously, your help is amazing and I am very happy with the amount of info you've presented! I owe you one!

John, yep you were pretty close! I'll have to remember the size and weight next time I have an unusual specimen. I'll admit the color was off with my photos, its actual color in real light is, well, what gold normally looks like, instead of the brassy goldish hue presented in my photos.

Again thank you everyone for your help!

EDIT: Spelling/Grammar (Just woke up)
