I hope someone can help me identify the following medal. I have no idea about its origin. I've had it for years. I'm really amazed about how much story is told in such a limited space--something about a journey, there's some kind of celestial object over the traverler's shoulder, crossing a rocky stream, cathedral in the background with cross on top of spire, unidentified flying object in the sky,... The back is equally dense in information, even though I have no idea what all it says. However, I do believe one of the inner rings displays the 12 signs of the zodiac. Any help would be appreciated. Edited by Idsudo 12/27/2021 5:52 pm

Welcome.
The traveller is a classic representation of St Christopher: staff in hand, with the child Jesus on his shoulder, crossing a river.

The "obverse", for want of a definition, is a simplified representation for the Aztec Sun Stone calendar-disc. The Sun Stone became widely symbolic of Mexico, ever since it was rediscovered in 1790 after being buried under the central plaza in Mexico City by the Conquistadors.

Pretty bizarre object combining iconic Christian and "pagan" (Aztec) motifs (BTW, that UFO is probably the Holy Spirit ) Maybe there is an inside joke there...Or someone just hedging their bets.

The "UFO" should be a dove, the symbolic representation of the Holy Spirit.
The whole item is rather crudely made, which is neither here nor there I suppose, but it makes it hard to discern who did it. Perhaps a "home made" item.
It would be interesting to know them metal it is made of.

I'm pretty sure it's silver. On more research, yeah, St. Christopher on one side with a Mayan calendar on the reverse for some reason. The St. Christopher scene is also unique in that it shows his entire body even though the general scene is identical to the more common version that shows him only waist up with Christ hovering over his left shoulder.

The 'UFO' has some of the distinguishing characteristics of a C-130. Unfortunately, the tail appears to be missing.

@ids, first welcome to CCF. Second, I wonder if this is actually a pendant. There seems to be a divot at 1 o'clock on the Saint Christopher side and 11 o'clock on the Aztec calendar side. Does the edge look like it has been more recently filed down?
