Hello all,

This is my first Roman coin, (Denarius of Serverus Alexander) that was gifted to me. I love Roman history but I am officially new to the hobby. I know it will not be of the quality or scarcity many collect, but it is my first coin and I haven't got over how old (hopefully) it is yet and keep prodding at it daily.

I was told it was genuine (and I have read a lot of information to help me out, looked for casting marks etc), but thought I'd double check on here as it has various bronzey marks that look strange to me (such as on the neck). I have photographed the coin under slightly differing light as below.

Any help would be absolutely appreciated,
Dan.

What is the edge like? It shouldn't look filed.

I think the marks (and the strange flan shape) are actually quite difficult to fake.

Thanks so much Palouche for the extra information, I have been looking up all the markings and their meanings, it is a lot of fun. I have just weighted the coin with my digital kitchen scales and it hovers between 3 and 4g, which appears to be about right? I guess the bronzey portions are base metals coming through or foreign/spilt material on the coin during use. The neck blotch is definitely metal and appears to be laying above the surface.

Thanks also to jbuck for the welcome!

Hi John, the edges are fairly smooth in an uneven way, I can't see any obvious filing or any trace of a seam. The metal is fairly dull, maybe appearing a little more so than the faces.

Well, I can't see any reason for it to be fake.

The metals on the surface could well have come from other coins. Many of these come from hoards, and have been sitting in the middle of hundreds of other coins for 2000 years while the base metals leach out of the coins above them.

......Also maybe the small dark patch on the portraits neck could be horn silver?

It looks to be a decent piece: readable legends and the portrait is clear.

It is understandable that you keep prodding it. If you think about it, you have this amazing 2000 year old artifact, money that people spent just like we do now.
