I regularly see these listings with bidding or buy it now that sell you can easily see that the coins are all small bust, do people buy them without knowing how to tell the difference in hopes it might be a large bust? This year in particular had a relatively high mintage. A few weeks ago I found an entire roll minus 1 coin on the end and they were all 1973 small bust.

The large bust is extremely easy to spot so just to ant to assume new collectors hoping to get one without knowing what to actually look for. I check the sold listing and there is a few pages of them selling for 2-3$ a piece.

My only other guess is more seasoned collectors trying to get a mid or high MS of the small bust, this year confuses me a bit why they regularly sell for a premium. I have probably two full rolls worth some UNC, the only reason I haven't dumped them back at the bank is because I keep seeing them sell.

You can sell just about anything and I don't understand it either. I just crh $100 of quarters and put Olympic, coloured etc up in lots. Usually get 2-3 times face plus shipping.

I have never tried selling anything but have a huge lot of non silver coins just because I see them sell sometimes on ebay, none though are comparable to the 1973 quarter with the regular frequency I see them selling for.

Maybe one day I'll try selling some coins, the hoard in my apartment is getting to large and my fiance is really pushing for me to get rid of coins.

geez I just took 400.00 worth of the small bust to the bank. My father in law saved them for years and we found them just recently. Took me all day and a bit to look at them. Should have sold them on ebay lol

Lots of people don't know how to tell the difference from a small bust or large bust 1973 quarters, so they play trial on error and like you say hope for a large bust quarter Knowledge Rules buy a Canadian coin book.

Edit: EDM, I've never had a problem either picked this up years ago

That makes sense, I still have trouble telling some varieties from others. For the 73 it's simple for me, if the beads on the obverse are right against the rim then you have a large bust. It's just so regular for the small bust to sell for a premium that it shocked me. Guess I'll just keep hoarding 73s untill I decide to sell my first coins ever, when ever that might be lol. Unfortunately my ethics won't let me lable them without putting small bead in the title so mine probably won't sell.

For what it's worth, I've never had a problem recognizing a large bust (wink).

The small bust is easy to tell the difference (in American comparison it's easier to see then wide WAM or CAM? If the beads on the obverse are as close to the rim as the reverse then you have a large bust.

My point is they are still common circulation finds but people are buying them for well over there worth. None of the listings in sold say small or large bust(for the most part) but they sell for 2$ after shipping up to 10$ for one

People like to collect horses, mounties/police, one offs etc... it all depends how you value your time and effort. Does paying $5 for a $0.50 cent coin make sense, sure, you could drive to a coin shop and save a couple bucks or bank for CRH + time and maybe get one. But then you have gas, parking etc...

That's a nice large bust papeldog,

I only kept the full roll and a dozen or two others because recently I noticed they sell on ebay.

I did find an upgrade of my own small bust out of the full roll.

They sell well simply because people like the mountie reverse, it's iconic, a brisk seller since '73.

Interesting, thanks for all the answers. I was definitely a little surprised when I found a whole roll of them a few weeks back. Also it was hidden because the ender that was open was the only non 73 quarter. I imagine someone with a huge hoard of them decided to get rid of some lower grade ones, most of them look very nice, I didn't inspect them much just checked for large bust and pulled one that looked nice then the one I had saved already. They will probably sit on my desk for the next few months lol. I have had almost no time to actually look at my coins at home.
