It has only been in the last couple of weeks that I have looked at what is offered at the US Mint and I sure would like to understand what is going on better. Why can I purchase a 2009 silver eagle off of ebay or from any number of stores but I cannot buy the same thing from the US mint? I do see a 2009 proof set scheduled for later this summer but what about the uncirculated ones? Is this just something that I missed out on and have to purchase on the secondary market? Does anyone know how much they would have paid for them originally? How are some of these retailers getting all those MS70 silver eagles; just ordering lots and lots of them and sorting through them? Would you consider the Gold and Silver Eagles to be collectible? If so, at what grade? I see so many out there for sale with quite the premium so they cannot just be sought after as bullion. How many people buy coins from the mint just to resale them later? It would seem that with the prices I see that one could offset the cost of collecting by doing something like this. Collecting, hording, investing and selling; trusted agents and unscrupulous sellers; Ancients or modern; US coins, Canadian Coins and World coins from so many countries I've lost count; counterfeits, cleaned coins, problem coins of all sorts. What's a person to do?

I checked on the dealer program once long time ago, seems like it took all kinds of paperwork and certification of a bricks and mortar storefront, large minimum purchases and a 4% discount. can't remember much more than that, just that there was no way I could qualify.

Only a certain few I think it is 11 dealers can buy just regular bullion silver eagles from the mint.. The proof sets have been for a while offered later in the year.. I think the clad is released in the spring and silver in the summer... The uncirculated sets come out in the summer also I believe...No you have not missed out on the 2009 proof set or uncirculated.. but you did miss the 2008 proof set, proof silver eagle, and Special burnished silver eagle

Thanks for the information. It sounds like one of my answers is that a relatively few people are able to order and then pick through the silver eagles for the high quality ones and sell them for quite a markup.
No other experiences or opinions? Or is this another topic like cleaning coins, that is not a favorite discussion?

It is not that the Eagles are picked through or anything, the few dealers that are allowed to purchase them get hundreds of thousands of Silver Eagles. They come in boxes of 500 affectionately called http://cgi.ebay.com/AMERICAN-SILVER...07_W0QQitemZ330295536537QQcmdZViewItemQQptZCoins_Bullion?hash=item 330295536537&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72:1205%7C66:2%7C65:12%7C39:1%7C240:1318%7C301:1%7C293:1%7C294:50 Authorized Purchaser, pretty steep criteria. As far as people having a bunch of high grade Eagles, some people will send in rolls or even a whole green monster to get graded and will specify to only slab if they meet a minimum grade, usually MS69 because anything less than that is just bullion value.

Not coins and not silver....but here's a couple of pictures of eagles outside our back door. When they are eating they are not friendly!

So is there "is a" demand or collectors market for only high grade ASE 69&70 only, and the lesser grades are just bullion/spot value? And well said biokemist6

I wanna say the 69 brings a little but the 70 brings a good premium... Anything under 69 I would not buy for more than spot or the average premium over spot
