There is an indentation on the Indian Head which has pushed out the last number of the date on the reverse. However my research has made me determine its a 1788 added to what appears to be the bottom part of an 8 looking at it with a loupe. Might be a good story on how it was damaged but I will never know. Coin along with many others have been in the family well over 100 years.

Just an attempted puncture, with an eye to using it as a neck or wrist decoration?

Frog,

I was thinking maybe the coin was in a vest pocket up near the heart and the carrier was one of the soldiers of our Continental Army and that maybe the coin saved his life from a pellet fired at him by a redcoat at the Battle of Lexington.

Then I remembered!!! The Revolutionary War was over 5 years before this coin was minted!

So maybe someone was just playing around with a hammer!
