Hello all,

Just acquired this amongst other coins.

Never seen this before so I am wondering if it looks authentic or not? It weighs 26.6 grams.

Also what grade would this be?

As always, thanks very much for your help

British Trade dollar from the Bombay mint. Weight should be 26.95g. A little light due to wear.

I'd say VF-25 or so (Sheldon).

Thanks so much all.

Any idea if this is authentic by the details? It seems fine to me when I compare with others but I have no expertise in this type of coin. I do know there are a few counterfeits out there but why counterfeit a non key date coin?

Thanks

I can't say for sure if it is authentic or not. There are a lot of fakes of this series out there - I think because they are out of the ordinary and so most collectors are unlikely to know how to spot the fakes. Being Oriental in design they fell an early victim to the Far Eastern counterfeiters.

The only area that gives me concern is the hem on Britannia's cape - the fakes I have seen have had a coarse, heavy hem whereas the genuine ones are finer and crisper. This one is a bit intermediate...

You could try a magnet test, and/or a specific gravity test (if you have good scales), to see if it's silver.

@city, I like @john's advice above. First I would confirm that a magnet is not attracted to this coin at all. Second, I'd perform a specific gravity test. If both of those are fine, then I'd lean toward this being real.

Great thanks. I did the magnet test and it passed. What's the gravity test?
