My husband's father hoarded change for decades. We have been cleaning the property and have found pickle jars full of coins he had saved for decades. I found a jar of nickels and have started to go through them and found one nickel that is quite different from the other nickels of the same year. It has been quite exciting to go through all the change and found some good keepers thus far. I read about 'missing chrome' but am not confident enough to say this coin is that. I do notice the rims seem to be different. The dull one looks thicker than the others. The denticles of the bluish coloured ones go right to the rim. this rim seems thicker and a little higher than the others. Thoughts? Am I right with my guess of the the dull one being a shoulder fold?

The dullness could be from some environmental issue or been cleaned with something.

The dull one is a SF Near variety
The other two are NSF Far varieties.
Both are the common type.

It may have been cleaned with something but it would have been over 30 years ago I am guessing. He was a trucker and would just throw his change in jars when he returned (a jar for each denomination) We have not found any coins newer than 1973. He was not a collector of coins as a hobby. Just saved money without knowing about or caring about any value of the paper and coins he hoarded. I found a giant pickled egg jar full of 1973 quarters- well over 400.00 worth. took me days to go through it trying to find the large bust (there were none) As we go through these we look up and try and find the more rarer coins. But it is fun.

Good luck in your quest then.
Looks like you have a big job ahead of you but as you say, you can make it fun.
Look for 1967 and earlier dimes, quarters and halves. They are all 80 % silver. ( except some 1967's)
Don't hesitate to show us more of your collection including any bills you may
have questions on. We like looking at pictures.

There could be color differences because of environmental damage or cleaning
