Yes Elizabeth I's many denominations are distinguished by weight, but they help you out with marginal cases by marking every other one with a rose behind the bust. So the sixpence, threepence, threehalfpence and the three farthings (anything divisible by 3) have a rose, but the shilling, groat, half-groat, penny and halfpenny do not.

Ok so the shilling is divisible by 3 and the halfpenny doesn't even have a portrait, but that's how I remember it!
