VF-25 , needs a soak in Acetone to loosen up all that gunk , then a Verdi-Care treatment .

Personally, I would not mess with this coin. It's a key date and he may not like what's under the gunk, the patina could be quite different after removal and give the coin an odd look.

We should never rush to remove stuff on a coin just because it's there. This type of circulation residue is harmless to the coin with proper storage and it also shows the originality of the surfaces. Any collector that has a coin like this can be pretty much assured it's never been messed with.

I'd put this straight into an Airtite for safekeeping.

I'd say the reverse brings it down.

On the obverse, just about anytime you can distinguish his jaw from his cheek is an xf.
