I have bought a few gold-plated and colored ASEs. I bought them at what I thought was fair bullion value. And I thought it would be cool to have a few. When I got the "colored" eagles, I realized that it was more of a sticker than anything else. The gold plated coins, on the other hand, seemed very beautiful to me.

Does anyone have any of these? Do you collect them? Are they worth anything more than a regular coin without the lipstick?

(I realize that the amount of gold on a gold-plated coin is negligable.)

The best part of collecting coins is there are NO Rules, collect what you want. You've got the right idea that future value is metal price. My dad always said his farm ground was only worth what someone else was willing to pay.

They are now worth strictly their bullion value. If they are of a date that would normally bring a premium, such as the 1996 silver eagle, they are now worth LESS because of the "lipstick". In quantity they could be even worth LESS than their bullion value because 1)Many collectors want nothing to do with them, and 2)The "lipstick" is a contaminant if they are to be melted down.

I picked them up because I thought they might be interesting. I like the looks of the one holographic ASE.

I have 5 or 6 gold plated ASEs, which I bought on e-bay for around what I would have paid for an unadultered ASE (in fact for a little less, since they were several auctions with reduced S&H fees). I actually think the gold ones are quite attractive, but truthfully I only need one for conversation purposes. I looked them up on e-bay yesterday, all over-priced with no bids - zero.

As to the "colored" or "painted" ladies, I find these to be rather ugly. It really only looks like a sticker pasted on a coin. I am not too happy with them, but I would keep one just to have it - again for conversation purposes. Luckily, I only bought 2 of these.

I am going to try to exchange the duplicates in return for unadultered, and start a BU ASE Dancso. Anyone interested, can PM me.
