Recently acquired a Columnario design 8 reales originating from Mexico City with "MF" assayer. Wanted to see what everybody thought of it. From what I understand, edge design is a huge determining factor in authenticity, and I have included pictures. Edge has wear, but still retains the textured high relief feel. Nothing immediately screams fake to me, but being the most heavily counterfeited design, it doesn't hurt to get others inputs. If any other information is needed, I'm more than happy to provide.

Weight: 26.70 g

jimmybob96 My immediate impression is that the coin is a Numismatic Forgery produced to defraud collectors. The edge design looks incorrect and resembles several forgeries I have seen.

I would suggest a Specific Gravity test to see if it is even silver. XRF would be of little help since it could be silverplated.

Interesting, I will get on it doing a dry test since that's the most accurate method I have at my disposal. I'm assuming determining if it's silver will help in determining what kind of counterfeit it is?

Definitely seeing a lot of uncharacteristic mushiness in the typeface compared to known genuine examples I can find online. The serifs are all pretty thick, and most of the letters have a uniformity in their thickness, instead of distinct thick and thin strokes.

I'd be leaning toward non-genuine.

The lettering looked pretty kosher on this piece, all have nice high reliefs. I did look at same year pieces to do some comparisons, the assayer initial "M" has a slight tilt to it, and I saw that in some other pieces. The surface mushiness is odd, it's most prevalent under the "8" on the reverse, yet other areas are smooth. It's not as egregious as some other cast counterfeits I've seen, but it's still a point of concern.

As swamperbob pointed out with the edge, that's already multiple points of concern. I do not know what the chances are of this actually being genuine, but I reckon it's slim to none.

Odd surfaces... either environmental impact or (perhaps almost too obviously) bad casting mushiness.

Whole edge is blobbish, but we are seeing an overlap in that first edge pic.
