This is one of my personal special coins that I will likely forever hold onto since this was part of my grandfather's smallish coin collection. As to what I observe here: I call a weak-D mintmark but barely that. It appears to be die pair #3, and by appearance looks F-15ish, but actual grade may be more like a high VF to XF-40 from a glut of weakly struck coins that year, based on some research I did some time ago. (PS, I'm cool with any changes to my old research  ). So what says all of you, I say weak strikes can throw off accurate grading, sometimes by a large margin     Edited by mrwhatisit

I find the date quite intriguing. The variety of die states and the beating the dies took that year really amazes me. The year they only had one mint producing coins happened to be the year they allowed them to go so far as to wear the mintmark completely off the coin, on 2 separate dies. Though there are many other coins in the series with notorious problems with strike and die state, this one hands down was the worst I would say. Not to hijack, but here's the ms63rb I sent off a while back that I picked up raw, I personally love the ugly thing. Coinfacts has a really nice looking weak d in the rb tab worth checking out as well.  |

Wow KYcc, that has got to be a VG-10   It is actually really cool to compare it to mine. No problem hijacking here! The 22-D happens to be one of my top favorites to study as I have a number of them. |

Great example, I'd say XF-40, nice original surfaces. What a great legacy from your grandfather!

That is a weak D! Refreshing to see a real one posted, it's been a long time.
These must be graded on the side that exhibits the best die state, in this case the obverse. There is pretty significant flattening of the check and jaw and a good number of hits here and there on both sides. The rims look pretty nice, it's not as worn as most would think IMO.
