I recently purchased some hole fillers for an album. This was my first purchase from this particular seller. Is this the usual quality for 1980's proofs? I also pick up an 87 S, 86 S, & 85 S. They all look like rejects to me. The 84 and 85 have similar ripple striations, while the 86 and 87 are more like an orange peel. I did my best to represent what is here. The full obverse and reverse images appear to have mirrored fields but that is not the case when more closely examined. Neither the bust nor memorial exhibit ANY detail. Are the proofs that should have never left the mint. Horrible compared to my experience with proof strikes. Can people get special deals from the US Mint for rejected proofs? I hope you'll can help.
That is normal for copper plated zinc, especially in the early 80s when they first started using them. Mine came right from the Mint and all look like that.
Perhaps the OP's enlarged and magnified pics exaggerate the rippling effect shown here but none of my proof Lincolns from that era look like that. Mine are all nice frosted cameo devices with mirrored fields and were taken directly from sealed proof sets.
No exaggerated images. That is a pretty accurate representation. Thanks all for the feedback. It is quite surprising to learn that this is the norm. It is good to know I did not get ripped off , except for the 1984 D they sent me which is not a D at all but rather a spot right where the MM should be. The entire cent is covered with spots. Thanks again.
