I realize these are pretty common, but I liked this one on account of its better than average condition.

Roughly 16 mm across, with the weight coming in at 1.73 grams. I have it as RIC VII 113 (Antioch). It appears as if the obverse die was cracked or gouged.

I've just picked up another of these, albeit in this case uncleaned. My impression is that there may be a good deal of detail extant beneath the encrustation. I'll start the conservation process off with the standard long distilled water soak, but will ask if anyone has suggestions for (properly) removing these deposits beyond that.

While there are multiple very similar types cataloged separately, I have this one as RIV VII 70 (Sear 16528), struck at Alexandria.

Nice op coin!
Your 2nd purchase is nice too but of a different ilk!
I wouldn't touch this coin with anything more than a soak in distilled water which will not remove any hard crustations. IMO the surface of the coin looks fragile?..Especially the obverse...But of course I'm just working from photos...You have the coin in hand so it's your call...

The results of the initial soak, which are disappointing. The surfaces, particularly on the obverse, are more degraded than I originally thought, and the hoped for additional detail doesn't seem to be emerging. I don't believe now that this specimen can be raised to above its present mediocre state.

You can do a lot to liberate this coin from unwanted encrustation if you know how to use a needle on the surfaces while viewing it with a microscope under 10-30x magnification and lots of light.

It's strange how common these are but not in good condition. My best by far is a counterfeit (and very small)...
