Now I know it has been previously mounted, but if we imagine it hasn't... what grade do you see this at? I wish there was a way I could magically make the mounting go away :(

TobyJ. I hate to be the bearer of bad news on this one but the coin has what is considered PMD (post mint damage). those rusted areas appears to be damage and is not correctable. they look like some type of holder was attached to the coin for whatever reason. XF details and really not a collectable coin although it may have some value its too damaged

Hi Panzaldi, I did say I know its previously mounted, I just wanted to know out of interest what grade it would be if we ignored the brooch marks. (judging from the reverse and liberty)

Maybe around AU-55. The obverse looks like it has more rub than the reverse.

I wonder why someone wanted a pin back on this coin. It reminds me of a love token, except there is no unique design to show off.
Suffering from bust half fever.

This coin isn't a goner. It is a much better date and well worth some aggressive intervention.

It can be greatly improved and some its value restored by tooling off those ugly mount remnants.

Of course if you slab it, the TPG will detail it as tooled and cleaned, but the end result is still superior to what you have now.
