Hey everyone, I just had a question about a coin I just got from the RCM. It is this coin (Year of the Tiger - 2 oz. Pure Silver Coin with Jade Insert - https://www.mint.ca/store/product/p...=prod3810037 . Its a commemorative coin from Laos that sold through the RCM. Its advertised as having a Jade insert (green in pics) but mine came with a white insert (I presume its Jade). Does anyone have this issue as well? I emailed someone selling this coin on ebay since they had a white Jade insert but just wanted to see if anyone else had this issue or if anyone else got the green jade that was advertised.

Im new to the forum and I wasnt sure where to post this so if this is the wrong forum please let me know and I will move.

Thanks for your input

Goozoo, Welcome to the coincommunity family.

As far as I know and confirmed with my wife (Asian), there are many different colors of jade with different meaning for each. I kind of like the white jade myself. I assume that every coin will have a slight difference in jade color for each coin. Also, I wouldn't worry if you think it's real jade or not. Rest assure that the mint would never use fake gemstones on their coins if that 's what is indicated.

While I agree with jimper's comments re: the natural colour variations of jade, I would have to say that, if I was a buyer of the coin, I would much prefer jade that featured a green colour of some degree. I think the contrast green provides against the silver is more impactful vs. the white.

Here are 2 previous Chinese Zodiac coins that were sold on the RCM that have different colored Jade inserts. Color of the gems is a preference. If your going for the meaning behind the color , then I guess that would make a difference.

Here is some information on what the gems colors mean

If I ordered this coin from the Mints site, I would want the coin as shown (green jade).
Would like to see a population report as to how many are green vs white....I'm thinking most are white because my understanding is green fade is more expensive/desirable than white.

Thanks everyone for your input. I do like the coin, but I guess I'm disappointed because I was expecting the Jade to be green (like the pics) which I think gives a nice contrast to the coin. I called CS and they offered to have me return the coin (no exchange guaranteed since the coin is sold out). At this point, I think I will keep the coin.

I agree, I would have been a bit disappointed at the color, but I still find it a very attractive piece. I would have kept it, too...

I got one too. I think my insert is bit more greenish than yours. Very nice piece :)
