Hello once again! It's early in the A.M. here and I just spotted this a few moments before typing out this post. Is it just me, or did I finally find a popular well-known rare-ish penny?

This will be my first find of a legitimate error coin if I can get confirmation from the coin gurus or with someone with good eyes.

date with a little bit of doubling

is that a double ear lobe?

Upon closer speculation, there is doubling on the profile of the face as well...

obvious doubling

Houler to the CCF!

the face is doubling... the it is Machine Doubling (looks very flat)https://www.error-ref.com/?s=machine+doubling

as for the ear, the lobe looks smaller and looks like MD as well.

Thanks for the welcome and reply! I think people welcomed me earlier but didn't respond to it. Thanks for the weclomes peeps.

Thank you for the link as well, @levelsofmadnes, one to keep in my favorites for future reference!

Wait, so it's not a Doubled Die Obverse error? It's a machining error? Is that like not as rare?

Whatever it is, it has a cool effect. I'm keeping it and safeguarding it lol

Thank you John1 for the links, much appreciated! There's much to learn and discern in this new hobby.

A few questions come to mind, does this type of error make a coin any more valuable than face value? I imagine not as much as a DDO?

Should I get it professionally inspected or graded? Or is it not worth it?

Machine Doubling is very common and thus not worth more then face value. imo

but some Machine Doubling have sold for some nice money.
example from ebay of a 1969 S and labeled as Machine Doubling https://www.ebay.com/itm/203781994967

it is a nice example to keep. at this point in time, I do not keep any machine doubled coins.

but I have started a collection of counterstamp coins... go figure.

like some have said, if you like it keep it.

good luck on future finds

Note the direction of the push of Machine Doubling on all other devices. Then you can see that is it not just the earlobe that is affected. On a doubled earlobe, the affected area is raised, not incuse like Machine Doubling creates.
