I just recently learned that in 1962 the mint changed the composition of LMCs from Bronze (copper, zinc, and tin) to Brass (copper and zinc) similar to the war-time composition of 1944 to 1946. So, I took this side by side photo showing the bronze and brass coins, along with the copper plated zinc versions I recently pulled from circulation, just to show the subtle differences. The 1982's are also the so-called Large Date (Philadelphia) and the Small Date (Denver) examples. Notice that for the Small Date coin that ALL of the lettering on the obverse has changed, not just the numbers.

Well to start off, they are not LWC ( Lincoln Wheat cent) but instead LMC ( Lincoln Memorial cent)

I think you will find that the entire design was changed when the mint went to the Zinc core cents from copper. and that large and small date devices are the same with regard to whether it was copper or zinc.

Oops. I'll edit to correct LWC to LMC. I started out including the bronze and brass versions of LWC but had taken those out.

There are brass and zinc versions of both large date and small date, Philadelphia and Denver mints. 8 coins in all. However, the small date brass Denver coin is extremely rare, with less than half dozen known. The reason they changed the devices was because the original design slowed down the coin presses when trying to make the new zinc coins. Apparently, the Denver mint was only supposed to use zinc planchets when starting to use the new design, but a few old brass planchets got mixed in. Find them, auctions have gone five $ figures.

Well, it seems like you did your homework. A lot of folks don't know that much about the 1982 cents and all 8 varieties... (if you include the Proof too)
