Can anyone give me a value and mintage info on this?
I would say the coin would be xf. It is pretty sharp.
Thanks!

The Charlton Standard Catalog list the 1872H with a quantity struck at 2,000,000 with a value of $9 in G-4, $22 in VG-8, $35 in F-12, $70 in VF-20, $110 in EF-40, $275 in AU-50 and $550 in MS-60. You must keep in mind these are Canadian dollars but still very good prices for that nickel. Hope this helps!

Wow...
The pics that I have kind of suck... but here it is

1872-Canadian-5-Cent

There is quite a bit more hair detail than what the pics show.

I'd call it an F15 to VF20. There is some wear at the left obverse denticulation and the leaves on the reverse are showing wear. I can see more hairlines in the pics over the scans, but there is still wear there. It looks like it has some nice toning that isn't showing up as well in the pics as I bet it looks on the coin.

It really appears better to the eye than what the pics are showing. There is really a lot more detail in the hair that what any of the pics are showing... If it would grade lower than VF, I would be suprised.

But in any case, not a bad buy for 50 cents?

I agree with the VF grade. My Charlton (60th edition) and CCN trends show a value for that grade of CDN$ 60.00

I ended up selling it on ebay... brought around $40 (which I was happy about, seeing as how I bought it for 50cents)
I asked the buyer once he received the coin as to what he thought the grade was and he said he thought no less than XF... Maybe I should have sent it in, oh well.

But now I finally have it figured out on how to take better pictures.
Thanks for the help!

CCN trends shows a value of $100.00 for EF-40 so I guess it was a very good deal for both of you.

I have no problem leaving a little for the next guy as long as I made some along the way. I am not saying I wouldn't have minded to sell it for more, but hey... should work out good for both parties... can't get much better than that.

Hi jdheyene, I like your Canadian 5 cent story- It goes to show there still are some interesting coin storie finds all around us. I like Victoria's hair do on these Canadian
I have a similar story on the 1872H(normal2) Canadian 50 Cent piece- mine was VF and I think 80,0000 minted. Anyway, I do collect Canadian (somewhat) but realized I would never get a complete series of these so I put it on Ebay- An owner of The icebreaker company in Nova Scotia purchased the coin from me ( ebay auctions) and the coin realized 250.00 for me- which was a considerable gain- I think I had 80.00 in the coin So yes, I was a happy camper also. habiru001
