ok I have several different canadian cents. I have one from the 40s and ive got several with queen elizabeth II on them from different years. Most of them say ELIZABETH II D.G. REGINA on them. except my 2004 cent which says ELIZABETH II D.G. REG F.D. 2004
but today I got a 1964 cent from a quarter machine recently put at my mall which has many different coins from diff countries. it says ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA. whats the meaning in that and what all years did they change the design on the obverse. I know they made it look older with her age but how many times and when?

thanks

I think they change the Queens age 2 times, I'm not sure when I know the last time was in 2003.

demonboy,

Dei gratia regina means : "Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God Queen."
The same like D.G. REGINA,but this time this is an abbreviation of the expression.
1953-1964 (Laureate effigy)had the obverse like the one you have
1965-1978 ( Queen with Tiara, that is a crown)had the new version of the Queen portret with "Elizabeth II D.G.REGINA"
1979-1989 ( modified Tiara)is the same obverse but made smaller to standardize,to make the effigy proportional to the diameter of the coin
1990-2003 changed the Queen's portret again, more mature ( a book I have it says this was the first design made by a canadian, doesn't give the name of the designer though)
2003 to today,Queen changed again, this time without crown and naturally a little bit more mature.

Demonboy: Are you sure that 2004 coin is Canadian? I don't think any Canadian coins are supposed to have the "F.D." (Fidei Defensor, Defender of the Faith) part of her title on the coins. That one may be a British penny. They're the only two possibilities; Canada and Britain are the last two countries to give the Queen's titles in Latin. This is what the obverse on my 2004 Canadian cent looks like:

Abyss: The Krause catalogue lists the designer of the 1990-2003 Canadian obverse as "Dora dePedery-Hunt". The one pictured above is the current one, designed by "Susanna Blunt".
