Good day folks,
I saw a bunch of other posts about narrow vs wide 8. I believe this to be wide as the top and bottom portions of the 8 seem to be wider than round to me, however I still have a doubt. I have made the mistake of buying duplicates in the past and am trying to avoid that again. Curious what people thought. Thanks.

According to Charlton's all wide 8 are repunched 8's.
Yours shows no sign of repunching.

According to my Charltons, the 8 in the wide version is as wide as the nine, particularly in the bottom half. In the narrow 8, it is narrower than the 9, and the top and bottom halves are approximately the same size.

Yours is the narrow 8.

The way I read my Charltons, the one with the repunched date is a third variety (narrow 8 over wide 8).

Guess I haven't checked Charlton's for these in a while.
It has been updated, and the repunched 8's are no longer listed including the narrow over wide.

Just for reference, here is my example, which I believe is a large 8:

Thanks all. I like the comparison of the 8 to the 9, so will probably use that. I was eyeballing a narrow 8, so I'm glad I asked first. I did check my charlton (2021, 74th ed) as well and it shows 3 varieties in the chart, but at the bottom says "The previously recorded 1897 N/W variety is not an overdate, it is not a narrow 8 over large 8. It is simply Die Deterioration around the small 8...."

I never used to pay attn to the small notes until recently, so not 100% sure what they mean.
