My last post of the week, I swear :)

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...320335680002

Take a look at this 1928-P Peace dollar. It is being advertised as being "MS+++" and possibly MS-64. What do you think? I was looking at the photos, and I noticed what looks like a crack on the top of the "O" in "Dollar" on the reverse. How would this affect the grade?

Here is a close-up of the anomoly. It looks like there is a crack going under the "O". It doesn't look like a scratch, because the top of the "O" seems to be bent. I have never seen this on any coin.

It's definitely a very nice example of the 1928 P Peace dollar. The glare on the picture prohibits a straight grade offering. It does appear to be MS or close to it.

Just me, but the gouge in the reverse does look like a deep scratch to me. (A gouge could also move some of the surrounding metal...) Still a very pretty coin and if you hadn't pointed out the scratch I wouldn't have even noticed it.

That mark on DOLLAR is just a heavy bag mark, that scalloped look gives it away. There is too much glare to determine whether it is AU or MS but I am strongly leaning to the AU55/58 end of things. It definitely has at least high AU details but the light could be washing out hairlines from a cleaning or other signs of tampering. I cannot even see the luster because of the glare. The coin went for solid AU money(for a problem-free coin) but I would not throw down that kind of money without much better pictures.

If this coin was MS, would the bag mark bring it down to AU?

Nope, a coin fresh from the Mint could have twenty bag marks and still be MS. Of course, it would only be MS60 but you need actual wear to take it below 60.

I agree with you in theory, but I have seen too many coins with marks as bad, or worse, in both the fields and focal areas in MS63-MS65 slabs. From the top 3 TGP's.

This is assuming that it is an MS coin.

I am not saying that single bagmark would take that particular coin to MS60, I was saying that any coin could have twenty huge bagmarks but it would still be at least MS60 since it has no wear.

Is it the lighting or does the coin look a little too bright (dipped), since most MS Peace dollars have a soft satin sheen on it.
