I've just purchased a nice '21 SLQ, and found die clashes on the obverse. First of all, the tail feathers and one star are plainly seen on the obverse, below the "B" in Liberty, and just where the robe comes to Lady Liberty's upper right arm. There are multiple die clashes to the left of the clapboards along the length of her right leg, as well as on either side of the knee. I wanted to know if anyone else has seen this condition. Over all, the coin is in AU condition, with all three leaves showing and a faint, but definite hairline, making this a full head...weak full head, but complete none the less. Anyone knowledgeable with die clashes on the SLQ's? Image: slq1.jpg39.59 KB Edited by seadog92 09/24/2008 10:44 pm

I really have no idea, but would you mind posting photos? I would be curious as to seeing some clashed dies on a SLQ. And...

Hello Seadog, That's a beautiful example of this semi-key date. I agree it should make the "full head" cut. It doesn't appear to be in a grading service holder; are you planning to have it graded? I think the die clashes add some appeal and character to the coin. Someone posted recently in the Error and Variety forum about how errors don't have much effect on the value of key date coins. If you had a common AU 1920 quarter with heavy die clashes, an interested collector might pay an extra $25 or $50, but since your 1921 is already an expensive coin I don't expect much of a premium for the clashes. It's a beauty. The 1921 is on my long list of coins I'd like to have. Congratulations on a nice pickup!

Thank you. I appreciate the comments. Yes, I do intend on having it slabbed, but before I did, I wanted to get the information about the clashes.

nice clash, and very neat pieces, esp on a date like that!

I'm not a stickler about such minor types of errors on a fantastically nice coin. The way I look at it is if you need an electron microscope to detect an error (slight overstatement) then you've gotten way to picky. I really like that coin as it is and would not even worry about such minor details. And if I had it, it would go right in one of my albums and never worry about what some TPGS would have to say. Of course I have no slabbed coins at all and when any purchased I break out the coins for albums. And WELCOME TO THE FORUM.
