Hi all! I recently had an 1812 Classic Head cent sent to PCGS for restoration and grading. I am going to post pics of two graded PCGS coins. Please feel free to estimate the grade on both, as I'd love to get the consensus of a great numi community on this. Thanks!

I'll say EF details (ED) on both.

a huge amount of these classic head cents have corroded planchets. this would have occurred in the barrels as they were transported from england. this one is a little worse than most but the coin would still grade as XF details.

it will be interesting to see what PCGS can do with it

OK, so my coin is the first two pics with the tan/green corrosion on it. I sent it to PCGS for "restoration," but they didn't do anything to restore it, they just slabbed it. PCGS scored it VF Detail. The second coin is one I found online on ebay, which IMO is more corroded and doesn't show as much detail. They scored it XF Detail. Maybe I'm sour, but I think I got the wrong person on the wrong day for my coin.

Always a crapshoot with the TPG's - you pays your dollar and you takes your chances.

There is not much that can be done to repair/restore a heavily corroded coin. I had both coins at XF Details, but I also considered VF details on both. You may disagree with the grade, but the grade is fair. Unfortunately, there are a lot of coins over graded and under graded in TPG holders and grading standards by the TPG's are always changing.

this coin should have been in an XF details holder. they probably decided that there was nothing they could do to enhance or conserve the coin so they just passed. I would have thought they would have at least sent a reason why they didnt
