I sorted out some middle eastern coins this morning and found this one in with some Egyptian 1 milliemes. It is definitely not one of those.
I am incline to think it is a Turkish 5 para but cannot find, in any reference, this exact design -but very close.
It's denomination is clearly 5 and date is 1277AH. I cannot see a regnal year and '7's seem to be short -I count that as strikes against being Egyption, although the overall design is rather similar to many Egyptian coins of that era.
Any advise would be gratefully appreciated.

many thanks
Jeff

yes, Turky 5 Para km# 699, also in the krause picture the first 7 is different from the second in the coin date.

How quick was that! Just over ½ hour to confirm my hunch.
None of my research came up with km#699 -all around though.

Many thanks
Jeff

PS The Egyptian and Turkish will be listed for sale on ebay tomorrow; along with several other middle east and far east lots. I do like to get them described correctly though.

PPS.
I have just found exact picture, labelled '1277AH year 4' and that seems to make sense. But...I looked at other denominations, same date and number of years and can't see any common way of showing a regnal year.

Do these have a particular way of showing year? (Rather than just era.)

cheers

The regnal year is below the toughra on the obverse, above the squiggle. In this case, it certainly looks like a "4".

I have listed my turkish coins now. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...E:IT&ih=015.
Also several other exotic lots -some Turkisk have attracted a lot of interest.

Thanks for the help
