I've been wondering how many Proof sets and Mint Sets there are left that haven't been cracked open. I've been hearing from a few dealers about certain years that are getting harder to find. Also have seen numerous advertisements stating the same thing on certain sets.

1.Have any of you also found certain years to be hard to find?

2. Anyone have any idea how many sets might have been opened?

Interesting topic. I bought most of my proof sets (1982+) from the mint, so I have not looked at the secondary market in quite a while.

All of the coins have been moved into Dansco albums; so I guess I contributed to the "problem" you are discussing.

All of the following are in the Mint Packaging - 1961, 1962, 1971, 1975(2), 1982, 1992, 1993, 1999 (silver, yea!), 2000 (not Silver), 2001 (Silver, Yea again!), 2006, 7, 8 (All Silver).

I wouldn't even know how to open the plastic cases on the new sets. Until recently I thought if you opened the sets, the value was drastically reduced. Now I'm aware that in certain cases, they are worth more.

I have 3 silver sets of each year from 1994-2008 and none are cracked open if I see the value go up on a perticular coin such as the 1999 silver set I will send it in for gradeing but the coin has to be valued on ebay in pr 69 at at least $500 per coin! none of them are hard to find yey you can find them all on ebay!

They really aren't that hard to open. You just need to take your time and use some caution so you do damage the coins as your removing them.

I haven't experienced any problem getting the proof sets that I want. I have about 55 total, none before 1964 so they really aren't that hard to get.

I have one from every year 1956 on unopened, and assorted silver sets. (yea a 99 silver which when I saw value kind of kick started my interest in coins again) But I have seen some of them being more valuable parted out than virgin but will keep intact for now. If I ever decide to sell, then will have to make decision based on values. JC

I have about 20 sets from 1961 to 2008. The ones I have, I did not open. I have no plans on doing so either; when I sell the, I leave them intact (obviously) and it's up to the buyer to possibly open.
