Thanks for looking. Needless to say I was hoping for a small date, but heck, finding an S in this part of the country is tough.
Thanks!!

These are super tough to find in circulation, even here near San Francisco. I've looked for 15 years without luck, but somebody here on CC found one once. These are easier to find in mint sets, or in those bargain bins at coin shops. I've found them there--good luck!

I won an ebay auction a few years ago advertising a 1970 S small date in the mint set. There was no close-up of the coin -- but the seller claimed that a local coin dealer had examined it and determined it was a 'Small Date' cent. When I got it, I was disappointed to find that it was not. To educate the seller, I made the following image of the coin I received compared to a true Sm Dt 1970s that I already had... The seller did allow me to return it, however - he was either a crook or simply chose to believe his local coin dealer because he turned right around and listed the item again as a 'Small Date' mint set. So -- buyer beware (and be educated). The awful thing is, when I first started collecting coins in the mid 1970's, my local coin shop sold these for a buck each in BU condition. I picked up a few - but wish now that I'd bought a roll or two. Quote: These are super tough to find in circulation, even here near San Francisco. When I first started Die Variety hunting in 2005, I searched a bag of 6000+ cents that my mom had been accumulating since the 1970s. She was a West Coaster, so there were lots of S mint cents. I did find ONE 1970S small date in the bag. It was in XF (or so) condition.

Not to bag again on ebay, but now and then I do a cursory census of 70-S listed there as "small dates". As much as half of the "small dates" on ebay are in fact large dates--and they sell too. So the more discussion on proper attribution here the better.

The Red Book lists them as a High 7, while Coin Worlds 'Coin Values' lists them as a Level 7. I tend to see them more 'Level' than 'High'.

Weak LIBERTY and the curl in the 9 is the easiest way to tell you have a small date. I've been looking for on out of circ for about 5 years and havn't found one, lots and lots of boxes and OBW rolls. But hey I might get one in change tomorrow!!

Quote: I tend to see them more 'Level' than 'High'. Red Book is comparing it's position to the '7' on the large date cent. The magazine is comparing it to the '0' sitting to the right of it on the same coin.

Kurt, I think you are remembering me. I found one about two yrs ago if I remember the time frame correctly. Interesting enough, In the lengthy discourse on this subject recently, either Coop or Foundinrolls posted a die example of a thin mint mark with a strong westerly orientation. Mine is the same as his example.
Just shifted from a PC to Apple and am still learning how to use it. I will try and post as soon as I figure out how.
