looking for help AGAIN! Interested in one of these 2 coins. Both about the same price. one marked "A" on lighter background and other on a black background. What do you guys think? I am okay with a circulated example.

Tough choice. A looks like less wear but I am distracted by the rim hit more noticeable on the reverse so I would probably go for B.

I would recommend passing on both.

Your "A" example has very noticeable rim damage - remember, coins don't heal!

The preponderance of straight-line scratches on your "B" example leads me to think it was mechanically cleaned at one or more points in its history.

You've inquired here about a number of Lafayette dollars, each has had its issues. Why not look for a circulated Lafayette in a PCGS or NGC holder that is free of problems/damage. You will be able to easily crack the coin out of the holder if a raw coin is your desire, and you will be confident that you are getting a problem-free coin. Just a thought...

Both are nice circulated examples.

Based on these photos cleaning scratches ? are more obvious on B, may be the lighting. I agree the rim hit on A reverse is quite obvious however there are also hits on B reverse at 3-4 o'clock and 6 o'clock.

Comparing the wear on both, A finer details appear less worn. Look at the rein straps along the horse's neck and hair lines and noses.

I would select A over B for these reasons. Good luck. Let us know

Commems brings up a good point. A slabbed coin might be a better way to go. You will know what you are getting, and if you desire, you can crack it out for what ever location you have plans to place it.

Russell, your questions are pretty straightforward and I personally, as the others have contributed, would agree with the others, and go slabbed better quality, but that's my personal preference.

You seem to have a good sense of what you're looking for.

You're wanting an opinion on these two and I hope our responses will help your decision process. Good luck and take care

I agree with commems, both of these are problem coins. There are problem free examples out there so I think it would be wise to pass on both. Lafayettes are normally found cleaned, so you may need to be patient to find a nice, circulated example.

You've received lots of advise, and in general I agree that you should stay away from either of these two coins. They are damaged and/or cleaned, so IMHO not worthy of a serious collectors set.

We've spoken before about how an honestly circulated Lafayette is not that difficult to come by. The recommendation to acquire one in a TPG holder is intriguing option if you're not confident to be able to judge the veracity of a raw example.

For a sense of availability of the Lafayette in honest, problem free circulated state there is a collector I know who has completed the entire grading set of these, every grade available from PO01 through AU58 all in problem free PCGS holders.

At the risk of sounding like a repeating broken record - hold out for a problem free example.

The last one is the best of the bunch, although it appears cleaned and artificially toned.
