I have researched several times on spotting scuff marks. I feel fairly certain what they are , then second guess myself. Whwn I see what I think is a scuff mark , I zoom in to see if metal was moved at least two hundred power scope setting.(I see lightning bolts sort of) that are irregular. There has to be and easier way. BadThad the 1957-d woodgrain you posted awhile back looked like it had a scuff mark above date'

Can someone clear this up for me?

With scuffs/scrapes, metal is displaced and the flow lines get damaged. This is a result of normal mint processing as soon as it exits the coining dies. The fields and rims are the first things to get damaged since they represent the greatest surface area. This is why the graders all focus on the fields and luster first.

The "interruptions" in the fields I always talk about are damage to the flow lines. At 200 power, I think you're over analyzing unless you're doing a scientific study into metal flow. :)

Are talking about toning or scuff marks? This just toning on the 57D, not what we'd call scuff marks. The striations are due to very slight differences in the alloy composition that oxidize (tone) at a different rate.

BadThad, below the T in "IN GOD WE TRUST" or is that just a scratch or something? And across from his chin? I know you are right that I over think things. It's still good to hear from someone who knows what they are talking about. When I make a final decision , I don't just rely on the scope by the way. I use my eyeball test. the hand loupe and an actual photo. I know it's seems like I am asking the same questions. Some kind of way I will make it up to you for sharing your expertise and patience.
