Hi, I got some UNC State Quarters (dates are 2003 and prior) and even tho they have nice luster to them, it looks like they may be starting to tone up. They are not hazing up in the least, but they look like they have been stained with tea. I like the look thus far, but would want them to progress further. My question is, does anybody else own State Quarters that toned? I thought only silver or copper toned naturally. Edited by Dollar1948 01/30/2009 5:51 pm

How are you storing them? Couple of mine when they were in a dansco started to get that tea look to them.

I've searched a lot of circulated quarter rolls and occationally I have seen what must be considered toning on coins that have plenty of mint luster present. Like you mentioned - it's not 'rainbow' colors -- but a golden brown toning. I know that the 2005 mint set (Satin Finish) coins were notorious for toning once they were removed from the packaging. It was particularly bad with the nickels. I had a number of them slabbed by ANACS and many turned a golden brown within a few months. This turned out to be a big problem for ANACS - people complaining when their previously bright and silvery 2005 coins toned so quickly while in the ANACS holder. ANACS (Austin TX version) told me that they paid for a study and found the cause to be an oily film/residue present on the coins as they came from the mint. It was this residue that was the cause of the toning. If this is true, perhaps the same residue is present on some State Quarters, thus similar toning can occur.

Wow Russell, isn't that interesting, oily residue right from the mint.I think its important to point out that my Canadian quarters didn't do this. Ceaton, I previously had them stored for approx 3 years in an album that had a hard Mylar slider, that slid into a softer plastic sheet.I do know what PVC contamination looks like, and theres no sign of it.I was always cognisant to ensure they were totally contained within the slider. I'm am in the process of putting my entire collection in 2 x 2's. Frankley I kind of like the look of them anyway....I've got the complete set, P&D's, so out of 100 coins I wouls say approx 10 of them are beginning to look like this. Thanks everyone

Thanks Hollywood, I did try it with one of them. It did clean it up, but I'm with yotie. I like the brown toning, and I hope I didn't end the process by putting it in the much needed 2 x 2.

Russ, thanks a load...Thats exacty what my State Quarters are starting to look like--- same colour indeed. Mine aren't slabbed, and I just put all 100 of them into 2 x 2s. The fact none of them are graded, I'm not going to bother trying to clean them up. Once again I like the look, and big deal if down the road and in years to come, the consensus is they look like crap. They will always be worth the 25 bucks regardless. It seems weird that the toning on the example you provided really seems to be concentrated from the middle then its radiating its way out to all sides. Mine are working its way from an entire side and sweeping its way over to the other side. The contribtions on this entire topic has really answered alot of my questions. Thanks to everyone, and Russ as well for sharing the info about oil contamination.

yes the State Quarters do naturally tone not sure why they do but especially the proof ones tone a lot more then others. State Quarters left in mint sets tend to do it more often then UNC because of the material that is used in the containers that make then tone (believe its the finish from the insert) hope this helps

I have a few like this that were on the end of the bank rolls. They do have the mint luster and are very attractive.
