Purchased a bulk lot of Victorian one cent coins about 30 years ago and this is one of my favourites from the lot. What are your thoughts?

That's gorgeous! Beautiful detail all around...

I'm a little suspicious about the surfaces though...Is that original lustre or has that been dipped at some point?

It's been dipped or cleaned for that rough surface. It reminds me of metal that has been blasted with talc or other soft material. I'd say 63 cleaned

Thanks everyone.
Looks like I bought this as part of a Victorian date set from Albern coins back in 1994. There are a few nice come that came out of that set.
Is there any way to tell if it has been altered?

It doesn't look as though it's got hairlines...it's just hard to tell whether that's AU/MS-grade lustre or whether it's been dipped in some kind of reducing agent. Often copper/bronze coins that have been dipped in this manner have a sort of salmon colour to them. Often but not always and maybe this is just the way this one has toned for whatever reason. You could send it to a TPG if you want a professional opinion... or you could just keep it in your collection and not worry about it - either way, it's what it is and its quite nice. Hard to find that sort of detail on any of those guys...

Yes, Nukepiper, responses state cleaned (altered). As a result of the cleaning, tiny penetrations (miniature pit marks) have been left behind.

I can confirm to you proof of its cleaning. If you look towards 10:00 on the Obverse side there is a dark dot. This spot had to be put there either before of after the cleaning since it is not reflective of other surface areas of the coin.
If the dark spot was there before the cleaning, then whatever the black spot is was impervious to the cleaning solvent or abrasive.
Otherwise, the spot had to arrive there after the cleaning, which is not likely since no other similar spots have formed.
