I recently inherited this coin and wanted to know a bit about it. We have bouillon coins but nothing this old. I really don't know much about coins. I believe the S is for San Francisco and the VF means very fine. I would think that if the coin is collectable it would be in a case but it was just in the plastic sleeve with a sticky note. Does it look genuine? What is the value? TIA!

Nice coin! certainly collectible whether it is slabbed (encased by a third party grader) or raw in a mylar flip as shown. Yes the S is for San Francisco and VF is the grade that someone assigned to it although it looks under graded to me. Current value should be between $2500 and $2800.

As requested, you really should post the big clear pictures of the coin removed from the flip so that the community can grade this for you. It may be worth considerably more depending upon grade. Also a weight would be helpful too. Congrats on a wonderful coin.

I had to resize to get under the 300k limit. I hope these are a bit better.

I'm not really seeing any considerable wear on this coin. Perhaps a little flat spot near the top of the head on the hair. Looks like it has considerable luster although a lot of contact marks. I think at a minimum this coin would grade AU-55 and perhaps in the lower MS range. I am not experienced enough with this series but certainly better that the VF grade it was originally assigned. Lets see what the more experienced of the community have to say.

That's a nice coin to inherit. That looks better than VF to me. maybe $2300-$2700. I agree with Mister T but will wait for others to chime in with more knowledge.

This is a bucket list coin for me!! What a super coin!
Decent wear, some loss of original luster around the devices on the reverse. AU-53

Nice coin. Grading gold coins isn't my strong point, but I'd think this is around AU55.

The reverse looks MS with strong luster showing in the photo. The obverse is not showing any luster and looks there is some circulation rub. I am at AU58. The 1891 S is a common date and most of the coin's value is going to come from the spot price of gold plus a small premium. The coin is a keeper and very collectable.

I'm not seeing the wear on this coin everyone else is. I'm at MS62. the difference in value between AU and MS could warrant getting the coin professionally graded. lets hold until we get some gold experts to chime in as I dont collect it

I'll say MS-61, possibly 62.
