Not real big clips, but a coin with four little clips is still pretty rare. Got this one today. 1970-D Jefferson nickel mint error - quad clip 4.82g

maybe the planchet didn't fall through immediately so it was around to get punched a few more times, just at its edges, that or there are some very hungry mice at Tom's place

Definitely not everyday you see four clips on the same coin. Very cool!

I see a triple clip and some deceiving Blakesley affects that looks like clips, but are just weakness of the proto rim.

AS I said earlier, don't see how 4 is possible. 3 yes but not 4.

I honestly can't answer for sure how four clips occur, but it has four. Coop has pointed to one of the clips as Blakesley effect in his graphic (the one by the ME of AMERICA).

If you look at the edge of this coin, there is clearly a significant amount of missing metal on four of the clipped areas. The blakesley effect will show weakness at the obverse and reverse rim areas but will not eliminate significant metal on the edge of the coin. A clear image of the edge of the clips will support my reply.

Looks like this is a mission for Mike Diamond here. I too, have a very hard time seeing hoe 4 clips can happen

Is there a description at this site of planchet manufacturing? They are punched out of a sheet of metal, but if a planchet doesn't fall clear of the punches like most do, any number of subsequent clips are possible.

I'll stick with Nick.
That is probably how most minor multiple clips occur.

Thanks for all the super comments! I've been out and away but should be back and able to take a couple edge photos later. Lots going on and should have some more things to post as well.

I have never seen metal loss on the edge cause by the blakesley effect. There are at least 4 for sure, and probably five in my opinion. Thanks for the up close edge shots which supported the 4 to 5 clip camp.
