I should probably have made separate threads for those two coins, but as they're both Antioch and both 11 mm, I decided that I might as well post them together.

Both of those were bought on Sunday's coin fair (same as the Galba denarius, and in fact from the same seller), and both cost 200 rubles (a bit over $2 then, a bit under now).

I am in no way an expert, january1, but the second coin looks to me like a Republican sestertius. Mercury on the obverse...lyre motif on the reverse. A moneyer type? I'm working strictly from memory here. I'm sure some of the other community members with greater knowledge and experience will no doubt be able to nail these pieces for you. Very nice pick up for a great price. Congrats!

Modest but interesting (especially the retrograde legend on #2) Provincial AE's. Can't go wrong for that price. Good score, J1M.

I agree—you can't go wrong at a buck a piece. Well done!

I should probably clarify: it was 200 per coin, not 200 combined, so two bucks a piece. Still cheap!

While researching coin #2, I stumbled on this VCoins listing, which is clearly the same type (modulo details of lettering), but in such bad condition it makes my coin look mint state. Yet it's offered for ten times what I paid for my coin.

Remarkably cheap for what they are. Are the prices set, or was there some haggling involved?

Nice pick-up.

Bargain bin mostly full of late 4th/early 5th century Roman AE4s. I bought the two OP coins, two other Greek coins that I would probably post for attribution later, and half a dozen of the nicer 5th century coins. I'm not entirely sure that the seller realized that the OP coins weren't 5th century.

There was another bin at 250 rubles per coin (also mostly 4th/5th century) that I also got several coins from, plus a few individual purchases at 500 rubles per coin, and of course the Galba denarius.

The seller has many other bins that I sadly didn't have enough time to check. With some luck I would hopefully go to the same fair again tomorrow and maybe check those bins then.

Wow, I'd be like a kid in a sweet shop!

Good luck on the next visit to the fair.
