Hello,

I have just come back from my friend's house where we have been examining her coin collection. She has this coin which we would love to know anything about, if someone can identify it.

I doubt there is much hope for cleaning it but is there any way we can get rid of at least some of the verdigris?

(Sorry about the picture quality, I grabbed these with my phone)

Thank you!

It's late Roman, But it's hard to say who it is until you remove the bronze diesase. This website has information on how to treat bronze disease. http://www.classicalcoins.com/bronze_disease.html

I assume it's quite large, if you can get nice, clear pics like that from a phone?

I've seen several fake large Roman "coins" with this design - three Monetae standing. The fuzziness, flan cracks and pale blue "patina" covering this coin also do not fill me with confidence; I think it's a "tourist copy" from the Middle East. It's a copy of a large, scarce medallion of emperor Probus; here's a genuine example.

Thanks for the info, it all sounds interesting regardless of whether it's a fake or not!

It's about the same size as a half dollar, I guess. You can't quite see on these pictures but the edge of the coin looks like the metal has separated into stratae, or lamella.
