This IVDAEA CAPTA AE As of Vespasian came in an unattributed lot of coins I bought from an ebay seller in the UK back in 2011. I have long wondered if it is authentic or not.

It's a rather low grade coin, worn enough where I can't tell a great deal about its style or the parts of the legends which remain.

The bust of Vepasian looks good and the coin has surface corrosion, which would weigh more, in my opinion, to having been buried for a long time rather than being a recent fake.

However, it was struck on a thin planchet and only weighs 6.98 grams. It is 26 mm. in diameter. There is nothing suspicious about the edges. They look good with no hint of a cast seam.

I'd appreciate opinions on it. Sorry it's not in the greatest condition.

I'm no expert but it looks legit to me. You could send it to David Sear but it may not be worth it. Paul, I haven't bought ancients for about eight years, I switched to modern coins and stacking bullion silver. I looked at my records and I got a few late Roman bronzes from you on your ebay store eleven years ago! I still have my ancient collection, plan to keep it.

It looks ok. Most bronzes from that period are in a similar condition. The size isn't too far out for an As, especially since they all vary considerably. It's probably leached a fair amount of its metal http://numismatics.org/ocre/id/ric.2_1(2).ves.304

Wow, that is light. Lugdunum mint? I've seen some of these Judaea Capta issues as low as 8 gm, but never as low as 6.98. Still, the corrosion is excessive and has to be contributing to some of that. Could the light weight suggest the possibility of an ancient imitation? In any event, it certainly looks legitimately ancient to me.
