The stellas of 1879 and 1880 with Flowing and Coiled Hair portraits are among the most sought-after issues in American coinage., and the gold Stellas are among the most popular U.S. gold coins. This is an example struck in aluminum with a reeded edge (Judd-1662) -- aluminum versions are actually about twice as rare as those struck in gold. Liberty's hair is braided, and a hair band in front reads LIBERTY. On the reverse a five-pointed star occupies the center, bearing the legend ONE STELLA / 400 CENTS. This Bass collection coin (Ex: Maris-Garrett) is beautifully preserved. The bright silver-white surfaces exhibit partial undesignated contrast between the fields and devices.
