Looks like these coins were struck in small numbers during the 1950s - how were they distributed? I assume they didn't circulate but were somehow sold to collectors.

They are only minted for collectors in proof and mint sets. I own a 1952 1 Pound in PCGS PF66 CAM holder and compared to their 1937 cousins they are super affordable for a George VI coinage collector since they cost 10x~15x less (my 1952 1 pound cost 700 USD while if I were to buy a 1937 sovereign in the same grade it would cost me at least 7000 USD).

The South African Mint had one pound and half-pound gold coins dated 1952 for sale in 1964.

The mint could not sell them to United States residents due to the US gold regulations.
