Question-About-1972-Lincoln
Question-About-1972-Lincoln

On the reverse below the steps , the copper changes color?

It's obvious in hand and I was curious if anyone knows what does this? Would this affect the grade?

Kind of looks like marks from an old rubber roller coin counter. Some of them are actually black from the roller.

Not unusual, I'm thinking.

Nobody can absolutely say why it toned there differently. Copper can do strange things over time. My guess is that area is struck more softly due to the amount of metal used to fill the obverse die. More softly struck copper tends to tone quicker.

I think it's distracting to the overall eye appeal.

Badthad you have mentioned that to me in the past and I didn't forget. Now I can't get that thought out of my head and always pause when I think one is good if I see that. I have seen pictures on the PCGS website with this same toning but of course I will be the one to get knocked down a couple points. I know you have seen the 1954-s and know the grade. What are your thoughts now. After having seen the coin in hand again and knowing more things to look for, I have yet to see a tick. You know when you are viewing a coin under a light with a glass and proceed to swirl it around, once in awhile a flicker of light shines at a particular angle. I have yet to see one small hint of a scratch. Obverse or reverse. I have a particular thought rolling around in my head that I will mention when I reveal the grade. Boy this coin is smooth!
