I was in my normal coin shop which I go to about once a week. He asked me what my opion of selling coin on ebay were. Thought it was good to do or not. He doesn't seem to spend alot of time on the computer. I wasn't sure how to answer him thought. since in my opion some thing are a good deal other are not. And with the high rates is would it really be worht it for him or not, what advice would you have given him.

I think ebay has its place in the marketplace. I would not sell high value, high quality coins and notes on ebay but I see no problem in selling others. I have purchased many items thru ebay and know so of the better dealers in Australia. Just have to watch out for the "shonky" dealers and individuals.

I agree,
As a seller it is a good opportunity to sell coins via a different channell, and allows you to build repore with buyers which will then continue to buy from only you.
On the flip side to sell coins for a good price is an art and then there are the fees.
He needs to weigh it up and maybe start off small and go from there.

As BM said, the main drawback with ebay is the abundance of "shonky sellers". Most of these, I would say, aren't even deliberately shonky - just ignorant (and/or wildly optimistic) of what they have. To that extent, the more "good role model" sellers there are on ebay, the better off ebay as a whole becomes.

Without ebay my stock levels would rise and I would have a ton of stuff I do not want or can not sell through my shop. ebay is 1/4 of my business...without it I could not pay the bills.

The problem for him would be coming in as a new seller. This would be very difficult.

It could be done, however, but he would have to establish his reputation through a policy of strict honesty and openness, good images, accurate descriptions, a solid return policy, and maintenance of open communications. ebay could use some new honest sellers to counter the estatedoctor's and pamiam003's. Further, before he makes the decision to sell on ebay, he should plan to be on his computer a LOT and, by inference, he needs to be fairly computer literate. I know one dealer who is very, very good, but also is very old and scared to death of computers; while he would make a very good ebay seller in terms of his scrupulous honesty, he would probably fall flat on his face due to his ignorance of computers and the internet. I spend over half of each day doing ebay...including scanning, listing and post auction admin. It is time consuming but can make a large portion you your income.

I enjoy searching thru ebay each day. You never know what you might find. Also enjoy bidding and (sometimes) winning. Gives me a buzz.
