Hello-

I am new here, and honestly, pretty new to coins as well. My mother was a coin collector, but sadly passed a few days after Christmas. I have inherited what is left of her coins (my brothers stole and pawned some) and I would like to start logging them and organizing them. For the most part, they are in little cases and folders, but recently I came across some VERY old coins in a little velvet pouch hidden in a little compartment in a jewelry box. A few of them have some sticky green putty like stuff on them. What is the best way to remove this stuff or clean them? I don't want to damage anything so I have so far left them alone, but I'd like to take proper care of them and start identifying them. I am hoping personal research as well as this forum can help move that along.

to the Forum!

It's going to take you some time, have patience, research each carefully, use the Search box top left, research each coin individually.

Use gloves or gently handle the coins on their edges, wash your hands before and after. Oils and dirt will transfer to a coin. You do not want to ruin or diminish the value/quality of a high value coin from your mother.

Read, Read, Read!

Learn to post quality photos of the obverse and reverse of coins you have questions on. One coin per post. Get a magnifying glass and or jewelry loop.

Good luck, we look forward to seeing your Mom's collection!
