I'd like to know if the tan residue now on the coin could easily be removed: and how?

Would taking it off improve anything in terms of the value increasing?

Might need the reverse photo to better grade it. Based on the obverse alone, it looks to be in the VF category. A soak in some 100% acetone and a toothpick might help some here.
Rest in Peace

You must show us the reverse of this coin but I don't think it would clean up without ruining the coin .

Reverse pic, please. Looks like a ED coin.

Here's the reverse pic from the OP's other topic on the variety.

The brown you are seeing is surface corrosion. Cannot be removed without further damaging the surfaces. You can try the route of xylene rather than acetone, may help lighten it slightly, if that.

I would leave it be at this point, it already has the appearance of a cleaned coin (based on these images). I've seen plenty of straight graded circulated buffs with small amounts of this type of ED. Yours has too much to make it into a straight graded holder IMO.

Pics aren't sharp enough to determine an accurate grade, but it's hovering around F Details, ED for me.

I assume you mean that if I send it in to the TPG, it will come back graded as a details coin. Correct?

Now the next point to consider is if a slabbed coin like this will be valuable enough to justify getting it graded. Assuming that an F 12 details comes back, what kind of value would this coin have?

Finally, where is the best place to get these type of retail prices for Buffalo varieties since several of the standard price guides including the Greysheet just do cover this type of information adequately?

Correct.

Not worth sending in for grading IMO. Best way to get an idea of value is checking sold listings via auctions and ebay. In this condition I'd say you could expect anywhere from $30-$50 (based on these images).

Expect less with sub par images (no offense meant). Better, sharper images that portray the coin accurately will do better.

Don't ever worry about offending me if that is your perception. The purpose of this forum is to strive to improve in every aspect of numismatics.

But in this case those are dead on accurate photos portraying the true patina of this coin. I took these with an iPhone 6s which is not the greatest but most of these types of phones are highly dependent upon the nature, intensity and angle of incident lighting applied: etc.

I will say that when I first started taking photos of coins 10 years ago I used a USB scope and it just didn't pick up the micro scratches and luster that these Apple and Samsung phones of today can deliver.

Sorry to get off topic of the coin at hand, @mdpmedia, questions about your setup. . .

1) How many lights are you using and how are they positioned?
2) Are you using any kind of diffuser?
3) are you setting your phone on anything to stabilize, or just point and shoot holding it?
4) how close are you to the coins and how much are you using your phone to zoom in?
