Hello there I have recently found what I believe to be a Anlaf Guthfrithson Silver raven penny whilst I was out metal detecting. I have tried to research for the same coin online but I cannot find the exact same coin, I can only find the Anlaf Guthfrithson silver penny with raven on front side and small cross on the reverse side when as the one which I found has a sword on the reserve side with writing which says "Hrafn Konungr" which when I translated from old norse to english translated to RAVEN KING..

Have any of you guys come across a coin with this same design? I'm wanting to find more out about it but so fair nobody seems to be able to give me any info..

I'm leaning towards a Jorvik centre replica!

The weight of the coin is 1.81g and its diameter is 21mm

Thanks in advance.

Congrats on the find. I'm guessing you found it in GB.

I haven't a clue about this ruler myself, so here's a link for some info on him for those like me.

I detect but don't have any insight to share with you. Never having been across the pond I've never come close to finding something like that. Seems like you might have luck finding information at one of the houses that specialize in medieval(?) coinage over there. (Or a site that specializes in metal detecting as they will have more members with more knowledge.)

Be sure to let us know if you find out more.

It doesn't look like a tourist replica but the fact that the legend says 'Raven King' is a bit suspicious. They invariably have the moneyer's name. The reverse with a sword seems to be more like Eric Bloodaxe's or Sihtric II's, not the usual reverse for this coin (a cross). The weight is also pretty heavy.

Thanks for the reply, John. It's a super strange find. Me and my brother have researched this for over a month with more questions than answers.

It does look like a "raven" penny on one side but the reverse as you said looks more like Eric Bloodaxe's or Sihtric II's sword with the weird legend.

If this is a fake coin who would fake it and for what reason?

Thanks again for the reply :)

I don't know enough to say it's a fake, although this coin isn't in Spink. If it's a fake, there are two reasons to make it - to trick people into paying a lot of money for it, or to give people an example of a Viking coin without them having to pay a lot of money for it.

I don't know if Anlaf Guthfrithson would've called himself the 'Raven King'. All the coins of the time simply have the king's name and a moneyer. If that's a fantasy legend, then it doesn't sound like one you'd use if you were trying to trick someone. Similarly, the apparent mixing of reverse types would be odd if you were trying to trick someone. It would also be strange to lose a coin you thought was worth a lot of money.

Anlaf Guthfrithson raven coins have been known since at least the 1860s so there's a lot of scope for who might've made a replica. I have a fantasy Roman coin made in the Victorian era and found in York, which I presume came from the tourist trade back then.

My wife and I watched coins being made in the Jorvik Centre, and they did say that the replicas were made with design/legend changes so that they wouldn't be mistaken for genuine coins.

Perhaps it was made by someone like Darrell Markewitz of the Wareham Forge? The second image on the page below is similar to the OP coin, but with a different legend.

Thank you for the reply gentlemen. Greatly appreciated.

I think I used the wrong word "fake" and maybe a reproduction would have been better suited.

But would a copy not be an exact copy? This is like 2 separate coin images with a legend I've never seen.

A strange but cool find.
