As I'm getting a bit more into currency collecting, I'm noticing things about the Friedberg design and note numbering system that seem just a bit off. I use the Friedberg design number as my primary U.S. currency type set definition.

I know a lot of the odd things I see are simply a result of evolution of the system first developed almost 70 years ago, as new designs are introduced or older design definitions are modified based on re-evaluation or new discovery. Other things I find are are less clear.

To satisfy my own curiosity, I decided to start picking up some older editions of "Paper Money of the United States" to go along with my 21st and 22nd editions. I found the 1964 5th edition and 1972 7th edition already (both very inexpensive), and they should be arriving this week. I'll be looking forward to start digging into this a bit more.

Depending on how that goes, I may start looking for additional editions. Ideally, I'd like to get a 1953 1st edition, but I'm not sure how feasible that is. I've done a lot of Google searches, but to no avail. Anyone have a good source for older numismatic books such as this?

I don't have much to add regarding your main question, other than they are probably sought after being the first edition. I picked up the 1968 sixth edition a couple weeks ago at my local coin show for $5. I am not a big currency collector, but I like the thought of having this in my library. I am surprised how inexpensive they are, just wish it was printed in color

Maybe try Kolbe & Fanning? Or perhaps they only have coin books—I'm not sure.

Same here. The 5th and 7th editions I bought were under $10 each, plus shipping; both were hardbacks and appeared to be in excellent condition based on the pics provided and the descriptions.

However, I'd guess that, like a lot of books, getting a 1st edition may take some patience to find one available for purchase. And would probably be a lot pricier...

Thanks, Spence, I took a look and while they do have some interesting texts on paper money, I found nothing from Friedberg.

I just found a 1959 3rd edition on ebay, also for under $10. These 3 books should give me a good start on my little project...
