When I was an active collector, the cutoff date between vintage and modern coins was 1964; but who knows where it is now since we have entire generations of new collectors who never saw silver coins in circulation.

i was born in 1981 so I never saw silver coins in circulation to me vintage is any coin with a different design then the ones circulating today except the eisenhower and SBA coins and the like.

nice article

Dealers will say grading is evolving as pressure from collectors to possess a perfect MS-70 coin may force some graders to overlook a defect or two yet still assign the coin a perfect grade of MS-70. If we let this happen, what will we call a truly perfect coin? MS-70 with a "star?"
How about MS-70+?

Like letter grades, where A was perfection but then A+ replaced it. Now it is common to see things like A+++, especially on ebay. The more pluses, the better.

A perpetual game of one-upmanship. Where will it end?

The other interesting point is: who do you trust grading your coins? Personally I do not collect graded coins (even though I have a few) but feel that certain companies are better than others and that a MS-70 at one would be lucky to get a MS-67 at another. The part that scares me is how many people grade and slab their own coins and count these a truly graded coin equivalent of certain grading companies. Yes, there are people that know how to grade a high end coin, yes, they do sell them, but the majority of these people are like me and learning day to day. ebay is the worst place to see this happen because of how many graded coins there are and like others, I have fallen victim to this.

So what is all my rambling getting at, just like any loose coin, do your research about the graded ones and be careful with your purchase.
