Hello,

I know counterstamps or interesting chopmarks can add some interest to coin, but this coins is rather poorly chopmarked. Am I (mostly) correct in this conclusion?

I am new to coins and still learning some basics . . .

I am curious to hear some thoughts.

Thanks!

That is not a common Chinese chopmark. From looking around, it looks like it might be Cuban. I would suppose that a Cuban countermarked coin has some extra value. It does add some history to the coin even if not rare.

There is one caveat here, which some disreputable fellows have marked coins now with a modern punch, but marketed like the countermark was contemporary to the coin's production, to add value (perceived rarity). I have seen a lot of British rupees with fake Arabic countermarks on them.

The coin you mention looks good to me, but nothing like having a coin in hand to be sure.

@wizened... Thanks for the specific link source.

One source called the counter stamp Trinidad/west indies. I tend to trust numista. I'll take a look at the coin in person soon and post ... Thanks again.
